Master of Advanced Studies SUPSI in Future Mobility and Railway (FMR)

Introduction
The Program on Future Mobility and Railway (FMR) trains both for technical and management leaders, is intended for careers in the transportation industry and in the public/private sectors of mobility & transportation.

 

FMR is a part-time program that allows for work-life balance and professional development. Four independent CAS build the complete MAS program. Students need to complete three CAS and a Master Thesis to obtain the MAS in Future Mobility and Railway (FMR).

 

The FMR Program is an evolution of the RSM Program, which was offered over a two-and-a-half-year period (2018-2021) by SUPSI. We fully reviewed student feedback, the changing mobility and social environment and the development of new learning concepts to establish a consolidated version of the RSM Program, which is more accessible, focused and tailored to the new requirements of the sector.


Objectives
Students acquire the necessary skills for careers in departments such as research and development, production, consultancy, and public institutions and can take responsibility to lead teams, to strategize concepts, and to manage complex interdisciplinary projects.

  • Create the concepts of integrated and future mobility
  • Acquire the latest and future skills and competencies that are and will be required in the mobility sector
  • Extend and deepen the knowledge of transportation and mobility systems
  • Evaluate the relations between environment, society, economics, territory, innovation, and transportation
  • Be familiar with the technical standards of the railway, mobility, and transportation system
  • Evaluate and apply the latest technologies applicable to the mobility and railway sectors
  • Immediately apply the new acquired competencies in the respective area

Prospects
The FMR Program is devoted to managers, public servant, engineers and experienced employees from the mobility and transportation sectors, as well as to people interested to work in these sectors through the acquisition of the know-how provided by this course.

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, Management, or other Technical and Scientific faculties.
  • Non-graduates Professionals and Managers from the fields Mobility and Railway must have at least 3 years of experience.
  • Basics command of English is required.

Languages
The official Master’s language is English (lessons and documentations). In agreement with the whole class, certain lessons can be held in Italian, German or French. Mini thesis for the respective CAS, as well as the final Master’s thesis, can be written in English, German, Italian or French.

 

Certificate
Master of Advanced Studies SUPSI in Future Mobility and Railway (FMR). For each CAS a Certificate of Advanced Studies will be issued.

 

Didactic credits
60 ECTS for the MAS (and 15 ECTS for each CAS).

 

Duration
Each CAS is composed by approximately 180 hours-lectures (each of 45 minutes) of accounted online lessons, workshop, or self-study lessons, which accounts for 15 ECTS. For the MAS, at least 540 hours of lessons and approximately 375 hours for the Master Thesis.
Note: Workshop class hours are accounted for a maximum of 50% towards the credit-hours.

 

Admission steps
Online applications are accepted at any time. A minimum number of applicants for each CAS (7 Students) is required.
If you wish to attend the course in another language, please mention it during the registration. The Course could be held in another language if there were at least 7 participants (in this case a minimum of 4 months preparations is required).

 

Trial periods
Students can enroll as auditors Free of Charge (FOC) for the first workshop sessions and the first three days of online lessons (week 1 and 2) of each CAS to evaluate whether they intend to follow the program.

Students are required to complete 3 CAS and the Master Thesis to be awarded with the SUPSI MAS in Future Mobility and Railway (FMR).
 

Course structure
The modules that make up each CAS take place in a block sequence and follow a mobility thematic thread. The course combines face-to-face lesson (workshops), online lessons and self-study moments. An introductory workshop and general thematic workshops will be offered at the beginning of each CAS. This will be followed by the thematic modules. These are developed according to a specific plan: they generally begin with online lessons alternating with individual study and conclude with a workshop. The respective CAS conclude with an additional session of thematic workshops, exams, and the writing of the mini thesis.

Online Lessons
Online lessons are planned to be held on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 16:40 – 19:15, 3 hours-lectures.
Note: lessons times are subject to change depending on operational and lecturers’ requirements.

 

Self-study Lessons
Self-study lessons are planned to be held on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 19:25 – 20:10, 1 hour-lecture.
Note: self-study lessons time are intended as a guideline for the students and are not mandatory. The efforts might be done at any time during the course; however, it is recommended to use this time as planned, especially for working groups.

 

Workshops
Workshops are planned to be held on weekdays, 08:20 – 12:00 and 13:00 – 16:40, 8 units of lessons.
Students will be required to prepare in advance for the workshops through literature and case study review, and exercises. Workshops are planned to be held in presence; however, changes may occur.

 

Dates
The lectures schedule will be available onto the website fmr.moblab.swiss and on www.supsi.ch/fc.
For the year 2022 the courses offered will be Advanced Mobility Systems (AMS) which starts on January 17, 2022, and Advanced Transportation Technologies (ATT) which is planned to start between June and August 2022. The Advanced Mobility Systems (AMS) and Advanced Transportation Infrastructure (ATI) CAS are expected to begin during 2023.

Online Platform
Online classes will be held using Moodle, the iCorsi platform and other online teaching dedicated software.
Some of the lessons might be pre-registered and can be accessed in advance. All lessons will be recorded and can be accessed by the students afterwards.

 

Credits Validation
The students must pass (75% minimum mark) a multiple-choice test at the end of each single module within a CAS and write a mini thesis on a given subject within 4 weeks after the exams. Mini thesis can be done in a group of maximum 3 persons. The mini-thesis topic and groups shall be defined and approved by the CAS responsible at the end of the second week. The writing of the mini-thesis and the group work can be started as soon as the students receive the written approval by the course responsible.

Locations
Workshop location will be disclosed 2 weeks in advance. It will be somewhere in Switzerland with easy access to public transportation. Other locations for lecture-related events will be communicated in a timely manner.

 

Tuition fee

Single CAS: CHF 6'800.-
Final project, Master Thesis: CHF 1'000.-
Entire MAS: CHF 17'500.- (+ CHF 1'000.-)

 

CAS and Module enrolment
It is possible to enroll for a single Certificate of Advanced Studies or, in exceptional cases, for a specific module. If the student selects a specific single module, he/she will be required to write a short course resume of approximately 5 to 7 A4-pages in addition to the multiple-choice test. The costs will be calculated based on the credits granted.

 

Equivalence of other CAS
Applicants who, during another educational program, have acquired expertise corresponding partially or totally to the learning objectives specified by the course, may benefit from equivalence, and may be granted a partial or total exoneration from some modules. A maximum level of equivalence not exceeding 25% of the total number of ECTS is allowed for the qualification. Students can choose other related courses from another SUPSI continuing educational program (max 25% of the total number of ECTS).

 

Transition from RSM to FMR
As part of the new organization, the study will offer to students who completed CAS under the RSM structure, some transition modules, at a discount fee, to realign them with the new structure. This is only allowed for students enrolled in the entire MAS Program or students interested in being re-certified under a 15 ECTS Credits CAS. The recertification might require further testing or validation work.

 

Integration of FMR and AAM
Both the AAM and the FMR Programs focus on mobility with a critical eye on the future. Special conditions will be granted to students who might enrolled in both programs (consecutively; simultaneously is not encouraged). Details are available upon request.
Note: The Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Program is currently under development and will only be offered if demand from industry emerges. Further details will be announced during 2022.
